The Texan made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Reds and was rocked for six hits and five runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 IP and then went on the disabled list for the rest of the year. In 2009, he pitched for the GCL Reds (1-2, 1.47 in 5 G) and Sarasota Reds (0-3, 5.46 in 9 G, 18 BB in 31 1/3 IP). During 2010, he was with the Dayton Dragons (4-7, 2 Sv, 3.84) and Lynchburg Hillcats (0-3, 6.86).
In 2011, he led the Carolina Mudcats with 7 wins (losing four) while posting a 4.42 ERA in 17 starts for the club. He also had a 4-3, 4.34 record for the Bakersfield Blaze. He walked only 28 in 149 2/3 innings for the year. He tied Daniel Corcino for second among Reds farmhands in wins. That winter, he was added to Cincinnati's 40-man roster.
