The Pawtucket Slaters were the first minor league team from Pawtucket in 32 years when they were formed as part of the revived New England League in 1946. The league and team remained for four seasons.
The Slaters opened with a 70-54 record in 1946, fourth in the 8-team league, then fell 3 games to 1 to the Lynn Red Sox in the playoffs. Pawtucket scored 562 runs, 6th in the league, but allowed just 462, second-fewest. Hal Schacker was 5-1 with a 0.84 ERA and other productive arms included Bill M. Marshall (12-8, 2.67) and Joe Belforti (11-8, 2.55). 3B Jim Coughlin hit .341/~.371/.410 and led the league's third basemen in fielding percentage (.943).
