After attending the University of Alabama, catcher Paul Phillips was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the ninth round of the 1998 amateur draft. He hit .308 with the Spokane Indians that season but then struggled with elbow problems for much of the next several years, entirely missing the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He bounced back with the Omaha Royals in 2004, hitting .312 with 6 homers and 41 RBIs in 86 games. In September, he was called up to the majors, and he made his big league debut against the Detroit Tigers on September 9th, when he earned his first hit and scored his first run.
Phillips spent most of 2005 back with Omaha, where he hit .268 with 7 home runs and 42 RBI before being called back up to the majors in August. On August 17th, he hit his first big league homer, a grand slam, against the Seattle Mariners, and he ended the year with a .269 average in 23 games. He was back with Omaha again for most of 2006, hitting .243 with 9 home runs and 39 RBI to a spot on the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. He got cups of coffee with Kansas City in July and September, and he had a .277 average in 23 games. in 2007, for the fourth straight season, he split the year between Kansas City and Omaha. He hit .238 in 58 games in the minors and .143 in 8 appearances in the bigs.
In early 2008, Phillips signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox, for whom he received a non-roster invitation to spring training.
He is a first cousin of Andy Phillips of the New York Yankees, who was also a teammate of his in college
