[edit] Biographical Information
23-year-old Paul Martin was one of only a handful of baseball players who played their entire careers at the big league level without spending any time in the minor leagues. Among this select group are names like Al Kaline, Sandy Koufax, Dave Winfield and John Olerud. A big (6' 6", 240 pound) right-hander, Martin was signed to a bounus contract on June 28, 1955 by the Pittsburgh Pirates after pitching for the baseball team at Nyack College in Nyack, NY and joined the Pirates immediately.
Martin states, "I only pitched in a few games. I threw hard but was wild. I tore a ligament in my shoulder and never pitched again. But I was with the team long enough to get on a baseball card, (1956 Topps), and people still send me the card to sign." "Jake" as he was sometimes called , was 0-1 in seven games for the Pirates. Martin resides (as of last notice) in San Diego, CA, where he was a chiropractor for over thirty years.
