Paul Mainieri played one season of professional baseball, as the second baseman for the 1979 Niagara Falls Pirates. He batted .253/~.403/.326, stole 12 bases in 15 tries and fielded .940.
Mainieri was named baseball coach of Louisiana State University in 2006 after twelve seasons (1995-2006) as the head coach at the University of Notre Dame, six at the United States Air Force Academy (1989-1994), and six at St. Thomas University (1983-1988). Mainieri began his coaching career as an assistant at Christopher Columbus High School (FL) in Miami, FL for three years (1980-1982).
Mainieri is the winningest coach in St. Thomas history, and the 2nd winningest for Air Force. His father Demie Mainieri was the head coach at Miami Dade Community College North.
