A better football player than a pitcher, halfback Paul Giel was runner up to Johnny Lattner for the 1953 Heisman Trophy. He was a two time All American at the University of Minnesota and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. After his retirement as a player, Giel was athletic director at the U of M.
Giel died in 2002 while in his car after a Twins game.
