Mississippi native Paul Busby spent five seasons in professional baseball from 1939 to 1943.
He had two short stints with the Philadelphia Phillies. The first came in the tail-end of the 1941 season, making his Major league debut on September 14, 1941; the outfielder appeared in ten games and went 5 for 16 for a .313 average. Paul would be back with the Phillies in 1943, appearing in 26 games, picking up 10 hits in 40 at-bats for a .250 average. That gave him a big league career total batting average of .268. Paul was then inducted into the United States Army where he spent the duration of World War II.
Busby spent five seasons in the lower minor leagues, hitting .340 for the Martinsville Manufacturers of the Class D Bi-State League in 1940 and .326 for the same club in 1941. In his five seasons in the minors, Paul hit for a career .322 batting average with 14 home runs in 333 games.
Paul did not return to professional baseball after the war, returning to his native state where he worked and lived until his death on December 5, 2003 in Meridian, MS. He was 88 years of age.
