[edit] Biographical Information

Patrick Leyland is the son of Jim Leyland. A high school catcher, he was picked by his dad's Detroit Tigers in the 8th round of the 2010 amateur draft. He had hit .597 as a senior and thrown out 14 of 18 attempted base-stealers, earning him Pittsburgh Post-Gazette high school All-Star honors. He signed a short while later, turning down a University of Maryland scholarship, in time for Opening Day for the short-season leagues. He started at catcher and hit third for the GCL Tigers, going 1 for 4. No one tried stealing against him. Leyland was one of only two Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League players taken in 2010 (a few WPIAL alumni were drafted out of college); the other was Dillon Haviland. Overall, he hit .219/.259/.240 in 41 games in his first season of professional ball.

Leyland received an invitation to attend the Tigers' big league camp in 2011, along with two other young catchers drafted by the team the previous year, and got a chance to play for his father.
