After pitching and playing shortstop at Southern Illinois University, P.J. Finigan was drafted as a pitcher by the Detroit Tigers in the seventh round of the 2005 amateur draft. He had dominated the Missouri Valley Conference as a senior, winning Player of the Year honors and making All-Conference as both a pitcher and shortstop. He had led the MVC with a .388 average while going 9-3 with a 3.24 ERA and 107 K (second in the MVC to Mike Pelfrey).
He made his pro debut that summer with the West Michigan Whitecaps, appearing in 25 games out of the pen, doing a good job (2-2, 4 Sv, 2.39). He split the 2006 season between the Lakeland Tigers (9-2, 3.16, tying Kevin Ardoin for the team lead in wins despite his relief role) and Erie SeaWolves (0-2, Sv, 5.00) and was back with Erie in 2007 (10 R in 11 IP) before suffering an arm injury. He had Tommy John surgery that summer and was released by the Tigers a year later, never pitching professionally again.
