Owen Friend missed the 1951-1952 seasons due to military service.

After retiring, Friend managed in the minors and was a scout for the Houston Astros in 1966 and the Baltimore Orioles in 1967-1968. He was a coach with the expansion Kansas City Royals in 1969.
