[edit] Biographical Information

Oscar Azocar played in the majors from 1990 to 1992.

Azocar was signed as a free agent for the New York Yankees by scout Fred Ferreira on November 22, 1983. Originally a pitcher in the minor leagues from 1984 to 1986, in 1987 he began playing the outfield. His minor league pitching record was 14-5 with a 2.31 ERA. In his first year as an outfielder he hit .359 for the Fort Lauderdale Yankees.

In 1990 Azocar played 94 games for AAA Columbus and was called up to the majors, appearing in 65 games for the 1990 New York Yankees. He was used more than any other player in left field by the Yanks, who also used Mel Hall, Hensley Meulens, Claudell Washington, Deion Sanders, Dave Winfield and others at the position that year. In August 1990, he often batted third in the lineup.

He was traded to the San Diego Padres after the season and appeared in 38 games for the 1991 Padres, while also playing 107 games for Las Vegas. In 1992, he was in the majors the whole season with the Padres, appearing in 99 games although only 37 were in the field.

He also played Venezuelan baseball, becoming a star with Magallanes.

While David Aardsma is the first major league player listed alphabetically under "A", Azocar is (through 2008) the last one.
