The Orix Buffaloes were formed in 2005 by the merger of the Orix Blue Wave and Kintetsu Buffaloes, getting the players from the two worst teams in the 2004 Pacific League except for a couple Kintetsu players who refused to play for the merged franchise and instead opted for the expansion Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.
