After the 1988 season, the Hankyu Braves were sold to Orix (the Oriental Leasing Company). The team only existed as the Orix Braves for two years before changing their name to the Orix Blue Wave in 1991. The team finished second both years as the Orix Braves, losing a tight pennant race in 1989 to the Kintetsu Buffaloes.
