In 1999 the Omaha Royals changed their name to the Omaha Golden Spikes, to coincide with their joining the Pacific Coast League. The name was a reference to the Golden Spike which was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah completing the first Transcontinental Railroad whose eastern terminus was in Omaha, NE. Prior to the 2002 season, the team name was changed back to the Omaha Royals.
