Northwestern University, located in Evanston, IL, is the alma mater of several major leaguers, most notably catcher Joe Girardi and infielder Mark Loretta. The Wildcats won the Big Ten Conference title in 1957 and were co-champions (along with the University of Illinois) in 1940. Paul Stevens has been the team's head coach since 1988, and former big league pitcher Tim Stoddard is currently an assistant coach.
