The North Central Conference is a Division-II Conference formed in 1922.

In the fall of 1921 in Chicago, a meeting was held to lay the groundwork for a new league in the Midwest similar to the Western Conference (Big Ten). In February 1922 another meeting was held, and after an attempt to lure some of the teams into another league, the North Central Intercollegiate Conference, commonly known as the "Big Nine" formally became a conference. The members of the new conference were South Dakota State College, College of St. Thomas, Des Moines University, Creighton University, North Dakota Agricultural College, University of North Dakota and Morningside College. By the spring of 1922 the University of South Dakota and Nebraska Wesleyan came on board as charter members of the nine team conference. South Dakota State and North Dakota State have recently transitioned into D-I and North Dakota announced plans to follow suit.
