In 1948 the Newark Yankees were charter members of the Ohio-Indiana League.

The Yankees' first year in the league saw them finish in the fifth spot with a 65-74 record, 17 games in arrears. Robert Dill was the 1948 team's first manager. He was replaced 0n July 28 by Sol Mishkin. There were no Newark boys who finished in the league's top stats categories.

In 1949 the Newark team dropped a notch in the standings, finishing sixth with a 65-72 record, that left them 15 games off the pace. Jim McLeod was the team's manager and again there were no Yankees who finished high up in the individual stats. Ken Beardslee went 3-5 with a 3.80 ERA in his first pro season after being a high school superstar.

In 1950 the team climbed to the league's second spot, barely losing out to the Marion Red Sox by one game. In the playoffs, Newark took out the Richmond Tigers 3 games to 2, but the Marion team shut them out in the final round, 4 games to 0. Billy Holm was the Yankee's manager and James Engleman led the league in two categories, batting average with .373 and hits with 208. His teammate Louis Job struck out 228 would be hitters to lead that category.

The league went down to five teams in 1951 and ended up with four when the Newark team withdrew on July 17. The Marion team won the overall title and the O-I league closed its doors.

Newark, OH was to see no more professional baseball until the Frontier League hit town in 1994.
