The New York game was a name for the set of baseball rules that Alexander Cartwright invented. It was called that because there was a competing set of rules called the Massachusetts game, which Cartwright refused to ever use in games that involved his team.

Ty Cobb recalled that the Massachusetts game was still used in some amateur games in his childhood. However, the New York game became the professional standard.
