The National League Championship Series (often abbreviated NLCS) is a 7-game series played between the winners of the Division Series to determine which team will represent the National League in the World Series. It was introduced in 1969, when the National League was split into an Eastern and a Western division following the expansion of 1969. Until 1984, the NLCS was a 5-game series between the two division winners. Starting in 1995 with the introduction of the wild card, it became possible for two teams from the same division to meet in the NLCS. This happened for the first time in 1997, with the meeting between the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins, who both played in the NL East Division that year.
