Sanford was signed as a 32nd round pick in the 1988 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds and scout Julian Mock. In the minors, he pitched from 1988-96 for four different organizations, going 12-6 in Single A ball in 1989 and 13-4 at the same level in 1990. The following year, 1991, he went 10-4 while splitting his time at the Double A and Triple A levels before coming up to the majors for 5 games, where he had an ERA of 3.86. In 1992, he again split his season between Double A and Triple A, going 12-8 although he was much more effective at the lower level. He played in the independent Northern League in 1999 and 2000. In 11 seasons in the minors, his record was 74-54.
