Byrnes' was nicknamed "Skippy" after a popular comic strip of the era.

On April 1, 1946, Byrnes was traded to the New York Yankees for catcher Ken Sears. Two weeks later, Byrnes was optioned by the Yankees to their farm team in Kansas City. He never played in the majors again. Thus, Byrnes' only major league experience came during the war years, from 1943-45.
