[edit] Biographical Information
Mike Mattimore was a two-way player, with a pitching record of 26-27 in the majors and a batting average of .204. The batting average is misleading since he had an excellent year in 1888 sandwiched in between unimpressive years in 1887 and 1889-90. To a certain extent, his pitching career was similar, with good years in 1887-88 and less impressive years in 1889-90.
He appeared in 63 games in the outfield, 58 as a pitcher and 7 as a first baseman.
There was a W. Mattimore who played for two minor league teams in the state of Washington in 1891, perhaps a relative.
The book Connie Mack and the Early Years of Baseball says that Mattimore was one of the earliest users of the term "yannigans".
