Mike Hartley was signed as a free agent for the St. Louis Cardinals by scout Marty Keough on November 27, 1981. Hartley pitched 202 games in the major leagues from 1989-1995. He pitched for the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1994 and for Nettuno in Serie A1 in 1998.

He was a coach for the Reno Silver Sox from 2005-2007. For 2008, Hartley was hired as head coach of the Heidenheim Heideköpfe in Bundesliga and would also pitch part-time, becoming the first former big leaguer to play in the Bundesliga. He went 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 8 games and led the team to a 23-5 record, best in the southern division of Bundesliga-1, but they fell in the playoffs. Hartley remained with Heidenheim for 2009 and skippered them to their first title.
