Played for Florida State University during the late 1970s. Won the Golden Spikes Award in 1981. Then drafted in 5th round of the 1980 baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins but didn't sign. The following year on June 8, 1981 Fuentes was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 2nd round. Played behind Andre Dawson in Montreal. Fuentes had 9 games with 8 at bats and only 2 hits.
