[edit] Biographical Information

Mike Fitzgerald became the 52nd player in major league history to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat, doing so for the New York Mets on September 13, 1983 against Tony Ghelfi of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fitzgerald was one of four players traded by the Mets to the Montreal Expos in return for future Hall of Famer Gary Carter on December 10, 1984; the others were Hubie Brooks, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans.

His uncle, Dan Gausepohl, was a minor league outfielder for the San Diego Padres 1979-1982.
