In 2003, Colbern launched an ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit against Major League Baseball on behalf of himself and other white retirees challenging MLB's right to sponsor a plan that only paid health costs of pre-1947 Negro League players, and not his and his fellow Caucasians'.
Colbern's father, Louis M. Colbern, was a minor league thirdbaseman in 1942.
