[edit] Biographical Information

Mike Butcher was signed by the Kansas City Royals and scout Carl Blando as a 2nd round pick in the 1986 amateur draft.

Butcher was the pitching coach for the Butte Copper Kings in 2000, Arkansas Travelers in 2001 and the Salt Lake Stingers in 2002. He was the Anaheim Angels' roving pitching instructor from 2003 to 2005 and was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitching coach during the 2006 season. In 2007, he became pitching coach of the Los Angeles Angels, replacing Bud Black.

As spring training opened in 2011, Butcher underwent emergency surgery to remove a cancerous nodule on his thyroid gland; the cancer was detected early and he was expected to make a full recovery without missing significant time.
