The son of Bob Brenly, Mike Brenly began his pro career in 2008. He was picked in the 43rd round of the 2005 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs. Going on to college, he hit .284/~.400/.418 as a freshman and made no errors at catcher. In 2007, the sophomore batted .278/~.322/.385 for the UNLV Rebels. As a junior in 2008, he hit .307/.378/.434 and fielded .994 as the club's primary catcher. The Cubs chose him in the 36th round of the 2008 amateur draft. He made his pro debut with the Boise Hawks and did well, producing at a .325/.399/.429 clip while seeing regular action behind the plate. Had he qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the Northwest League in average, right behind top prospect Josh Vitters.
