Catcher Mike Basso was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 18th round of the 1986 amateur draft and played nine seasons in their farm system. Slowed by knee injuries, his career peaked out at the AAA level. Since his playing career ended, he has been a manager in the minor leagues. After the 2006 season he was named coordinator of minor league instruction by the Toronto Blue Jays
