[edit] Biographical Information
Following his successful 1969 season, during which he went 12-2 for the Boston Red Sox, Mike Nagy was selected as the American League's Rookie Pitcher of the Year. He then spent approximately four months of the off-season on active duty for the National Guard at Fort Polk, Louisiana where he took part in Basic Training and AIT. He never again was as successful as his rookie year, but even then, he issued 106 walks in 197 innings, against only 84 strikeouts, so his success was built on sand. He continued to have control problems for the remainder of his major league career, which ended with the Houston Astros in 1974, but only in 1970 did he again pitch regularly in the major leagues.
After his stint in the US ended, Nagy starred in the Mexican League from 1976-1979. He led the Liga in ERA in 1978 and his 2.01 career ERA is the lowest in LMB history among hurlers with 500+ innings.
