[edit] Biographical Information

Miguel Del Toro made the Giants' opening day roster, as a non-roster invitee, in 1999. Despite proving that he was a solid big-league pitcher, he was sent to Triple A Fresno when the Giants ran out of roster spots. He was called back up the following year, joining the Giants midway through the season. His strong performances led to his only career start in which he defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks with both his arm and bat in the nightcap of a doubleheader. He went on to record the final out of the Giants' postseason series with the Mets. After the season, the Giants sold his contract to the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League. He pitched there one season, before injuring his shoulder, which earned him a release. Two days later, he was tragically killed in a car accident near his hometown of Obregon. He was 29. Seibu did not use his number, 32, for the next year as a tribute.

Recently a group from Menlo Park, California has embarked on a mission to get Del Toro's black and orange number 37 retired from the Giants. Stay tuned. - Matt King
