[edit] Biographical Information

Mickey Welch (Smiling Mickey) posted 307 career wins in 13 major league seasons. He rarely led the league in major categories, but was often among the leaders in ERA, wins, or win percentage. His best year was 1885 when he went 44-11 with a 1.66 ERA. Both performances were second in the league.

As a rookie hitter, his 20 doubles in 1880 were 7th in the league. Later in 1883 he would play 38 games in the outfield, and would have 59 outfield games in total during his major league career.

In his rookie year, Welch played for Troy with Dan Brouthers, Roger Connor, Tim Keefe, and Buck Ewing, all future Hall of Famers. Welch and Ewing were both 20 at the time. He would move to New York with Ewing and Connor in 1883, and he would play the rest of his career there.

He was reported as being the father of many children and was prosperously conducting a hotel in Holyoke Mass. in 1907 per this newspaper article from that time.
