18-year-old shortstop Mickey Micelotta was signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies before the 1947 season. The youngster would spend his initial season with the Dayton Indians of the class D Ohio State League and the Carbondale Pioneers of the class D North Atlantic League. Mickey appeared in a combined 65 games, hitting for a .211 average.
He would spend the next three seasons in the low minors, having his best year in 1949 with the Vandergrift Pioneers of the class C Middle Atlantic League, hitting .287 in 129 games and follow that up in 1950 with a .257 average for the Schenectady Blue Jays of the Canadian-American League. Micelotta would then spend the next two years (1951-52) in the United States Military Service during the Korean War.
He would have his best pro season on return from the sevice, hitting .297 with 15 homers for the Terre Haute Phillies of the class B Three I League and this earned Mickey two short trials with the 1954 and 1955 Phillies. He appeared in 17 games, often as a pinch runner, and was hitless in seven at-bats.
The Long Island native would play six more seasons in pro baseball, all in the minors. He would be with the AAA Syracuse Chiefs, the AAA Miami Marlins and finish out his 13 year career at age 32 in 1961 with the AA Birmingham Barons. Mickey finished up his career with a lifetime .243 average along with 104 homers in 1,626 games.
Micelotta was later in the carpet business in New York City and is now retired in Greenacres, FL.
