[edit] Biographical Information

Pitcher Mel Stottlemyre Jr. was signed as a 1st round pick (secondary phase) in the January 1985 amateur draft by the Houston Astros and scout Paul Weaver.

He is the brother of Todd Stottlemyre and son of Mel Stottlemyre Sr.. His uncle, Jeff Stottlemyre, was a minor league pitcher for the Seattle Mariners from 1980 to 1983. Ironically, he was considered a better prospect than his brother Todd, but he only pitched briefly in the major leagues, with the Kansas City Royals in 1990, while Todd went on to a long and successful career.

After retiring, Stottlemyre was the pitching coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, his alma mater.

In 2002, he became the pitching coach of the Yakima Bears. In 2003, he moved to the Lancaster JetHawks, then in 2004 to the El Paso Diablos. In 2005 and 2006, he occupied the same position with the Missoula Osprey. After the 2006 season, Stottlemyre was named Minor league pitching coordinator for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He became the Diamondbacks' pitching coach in mid-season 2009, replacing Bryan Price and held the job through 2010. In 2011, Stottlemyre was the Diamondbacks' minor league pitching coordinator and returned to the role until the end of the 2013 season, earning rave reviews from the team's young pitchers. In 2014, he returned to the big league D-Backs' staff as bullpen coach.
