[edit] Team History
The Mayas de Chetumal were a one-year entry in the Mexican League, only competing in 1998. They are to date the only professional team ever based out of Chetumal, the capital of the southern state of Quintana Roo.
The Mayas finished 11th out of 16 teams in their only season, with a 51-67 record (.432), 14 games behind the Plataneros de Tabasco in the Southern Zone. The team’s best hitter and most famous player was first baseman Oscar Azocar, who hit .330 but with a poor .402 slugging percentage in the high-hitting league (three separate hitters hit over .375 that year, and no less than 6 teams slugged over .400. Armando Valdez collected 22 saves with a 2.45 ERA for what was otherwise a rather non-descript pitching staff
