Max Brown has played for the New Zealand national team and in the minors.

Brown was All-League in high school. He hit .339 as a college freshman. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he was the starting center fielder for New Zealand (his father was from New Zealand), hitting 9th 3 times and 7th once. He went 2 for 13 with a walk, steal, 3 runs and a RBI. Both hits came off the Philippines' Charlie Labrador. As a sophomore in college, he hit .378 and stole 17 bases. Transferring to Kansas State, he batted .330 as a junior and .283 as a senior.

The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 37th round of the 2015 amateur draft. He hit .265/.333/.368 and went 6-for-7 in steals for the AZL Diamondbacks. He then played for New Zealand in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, hitting third and manning center field. He was 2 for 11 with two walks, three runs, a double and a RBI, tying for the team lead in runs. He got one of their two hits against South African national team ace Dylan Unsworth then got all his runs and RBI in a rout of the Philippines national team but came up empty (0 for 4, 3 K) in their last game, another loss to South Africa.
