Pitcher Matt White was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA for the US in the 1995 World Junior Championship. In 10 innings, he struck out 13 and allowed only two hits, but walked seven. In the 1996 World Junior Championship, White was 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16 innings while allowing 9 hits and 6 walks. He won the Bronze Medal game over Taiwan. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 7th overall pick in the 1996 amateur draft out of Waynesboro Area High School in Pennsylvania. White filed a grievence based on Rule 4 (E) and was declared a free agent on September 24. White eventually received a record $10.2 million bonus from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Debuting with the Hudson Valley Renegades in 1997, he was 4-6 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 games. In 1998 he was 4-3 3.82 in 12 games for the Charleston RiverDogs and 4-8 5.55 in 17 games for the St. Petersburg Devil Rays. In 1999 he was 9-7 5.18 in 21 games for St. Pete. In 2000 he was 7-6 3.75 in 20 games for AA Orlando Rays and 3-2 5.03 in 6 games for AAA Durham Bulls. In 2001 White was 0-5 7.80 in 7 games for Durham, and in 2002 he dropped back down to Orlando going 1-2 5.56 in 7 games. In 2003, again at Orlando, White was 0-4 7.47 in 7 games
