Matt Hobgood is a minor league pitcher who is notable for winning Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2009.

He hit .475 with 21 homers and 55 RBI in 101 AB as a high school senior and was 11-1 with a 0.92 ERA, fanning 101 and allowing 39 hits in 68 innings. He was named first-team All-American by Baseball America

Hobgood was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2009 amateur draft, following only Stephen Strasburg, Dustin Ackley, Donavan Tate and Tony Sanchez and the second high schooler picked (after Sanchez). He signed with scout Mark Ralston for a bonus over $2.4 million. He pitched for the Bluefield Orioles that year, going 1-2 with a 4.72 ERA in eight games started. Baseball America named him the #4 prospect in the Appalachian League. In 2010, he went 3-7 with a 4.40 ERA in 21 starts for the Delmarva Shorebirds.
