Nephew of Hollywood actor (and former minor league baseball player) Kurt Russell and grandson of actor (and minor league player and owner of the Portland Mavericks) Bing Russell.

Franco went to Japan in 2004 as Bobby Valentine's utility man for Chiba Lotte. He was 3rd in the Pacific League in doubles in 2004. In 2005 he hit .300/.372/.496 and was 7th in the league in OBP, 9th in RBI (78) and runs (73) and tied for fourth in doubles (28),
