[edit] Biographical Information
S.M. "Mase" Graffen was the manager of the 1876 St. Louis Brown Stockings in the first year of the National League. He never played major league baseball, but was quite successful as a manager in 1876, going 39-17 before he was replaced near the end of the season.
Graffen had been associated with cricket in earlier years.
The book Level Playing Fields refers to Graffen as manager of a St. Louis team writing to Harry Wright in 1875 about problems with the hardness of base paths, but it is not clear if Graffen managed an amateur team in 1875, had some managerial-type role with the 1875 St. Louis Brown Stockings, or if the book means to say 1876.
