Marty DeMerritt was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 1971 amateur draft and played 8 seasons in the minors for the Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Houston Astros.

DeMerritt began his coaching career with the San Francisco Giants organization in 1983 and he has also applied his trade in the Far East, coaching pitchers in Korea.

DeMerritt was pitching coach of the SF Giants in 1989 and the Chicago Cubs in 1999.

DeMerritt was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2000. He has been in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays chain since 2001. He was the pitching coach of the Bakersfield Blaze from 2001 to 2004 and Visalia Oaks of the California League in 2005 and 2006. Previous Cal League stops include Fresno in 1985 and High Desert in 1993. After the 2006 season, DeMerritt was named pitching coach of the Princeton Devil Rays.

DeMerritt goes by the nickname "Dawg" and is a huge fan of Hulk Hogan.
