Marlon Abea

Marlon Abea has been a member of the Nicaraguan national team on and off from 1990 through 2008.

Abea was 1 for 2 in the 1990 Baseball World Cup as the backup catcher for the Silver Medalists. In the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, he was 3 for 6. During the 1998 Baseball World Cup, Marlon was 2 for 10 with a double and steal and threw out 2 of 4 attempted base-stealers; Nicaragua won Bronze. In the 1998 Haarlem Baseball Week, Abea went 5 for 10 with a homer, walk, 3 runs and 3 RBI.

In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, the veteran catcher did very well in regular duty, hitting .308/.325/.538 with 10 RBI in 10 games. He was back with Nicaragua for the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, hitting .286/.286/.321 as their starting catcher.

In the Nicaraguan leagues, Abea has been a reliable performer. He hit .722 in the 1996 finals, setting the record. Through 2008, he is among the all-time leaders in homers (119, 16th place) and hits (1,262, 15th place). In the Nicaraguan Winter League, he led the 2004-2005 season in doubles (14) and RBI (33) and tied Luis Iglesias for the most homers (4).
