Mark Johnson played in the New York Mets chain from 1967 to 1969.

Johnson was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico (1970-1971), University of Arizona (1972-1976), Mississippi State University (1977-1982), and Texas A&M University (1983-1984).

Johnson was the head coach at Texas A&M from 1985 to 2005, leading the school to the College World Series in 1993 and 1999. In 2007, Johnson became the head coach at Sam Houston State University.
