Mark Gilbert was a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1985, when he played in 7 games, making his debut as a pinch hitter on July 21st and starting the next 6 games between July 22nd and July 27th. He started 4 games in center field, and one each in right and left. He hit leadoff 4 times and batted 9th twice. His first hit was a bunt single against Randy O'Neal of the Detroit Tigers on July 22nd. He did not commit an error in his 7 games in the outfield.

After his brief career in professional baseball, Gilbert went on to work in the financial services industry, where he was quite successful. He became financial administrator to the Democratic Party national committee during President Barack Obama's re-election campaign in 2012, and as a reward for his services was later named the United States Ambassador to New Zealand. His nomination was approved by Congress in December 2014.
