Father of Nate Cornejo, Mardie Cornejo pitched well during his one season in the majors. He appeared in 25 games for the New York Mets in 1978, posting an ERA of 2.45 in 36.2 innings. The team ERA was 3.87 He had a record of 4-2 with 3 saves. His manager that year was Joe Torre, in Torre's second year as a major league manager.
A New York Times article [1] indicates that Mardie had one game where he gave up five runs in one inning - but for that one game, he would have had a 1.25 ERA in 1978 in the majors.
Mardie was at the University of Tulsa in the early 1970s when it was a baseball powerhouse, after starting out at Miami University. Drafted in the 21st round in 1973, he spent most of his minor league career in the Mets organization.
From 1973 to 1975 he was a starter, and then in 1976, when he became a reliever, his ERA dropped to 2.31 with the Jackson Mets in the Texas League. The following year it was 2.64 as he went 11-6 with 14 saves for the AAA Tidewater Tides.
He was traded in March 1979 to the Detroit Tigers and spent the 1979 season in the minors at Evansville. he went 5-5, 5.42 in 31 games and retired after the season.
