Catcher Luis Martinez reached the majors with the San Diego Padres in 2011.

He was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 11th round of the 2005 amateur draft, however he opted not to sign. He was next drafted by the Padres in the 12th round of the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Ash Lawson and began his professional career that year.

Martinez played for the Eugene Emeralds and Fort Wayne Wizards in 2007, hitting a combined .253 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 45 games. In 2008, he hit .223 with three home runs and 19 RBI with the Wizards. With the Lake Elsinore Storm and Portland Beavers in 2009, Martinez hit .286 with four home runs and 41 RBI in 94 games. He hit .282 with two home runs and 31 RBI with the San Antonio Missions in 2010.

Recalled to San Diego on July 8, 2011, Luis got into only one game for the Padres during his first stint on the big league roster, entering the game of July 15 against the San Francisco Giants as a pinch hitter, and then staying in to catch, going 0 for 2. He was then sent back to AAA the next day as Logan Forsythe was called up. he had another sting with the Padres later in the year, ending up playing 22 games with a .203 average, one homer and 10 RBI. In the minors, he hit .323 in 58 games for the AAA Tucson Padres with 17 doubles. On December 21st, the Padres traded him to the Texas Rangers in return for Class A pitcher Ryan Kelly.
