Luis Machuca pitched his fourth minor league season in 2008. Machuca was signed by the Cincinnati Reds three days after his 17th birthday, after having been scouted by Anibal Reluz. Machuca debuted as a pro with the 2005 VSL Reds, allowing 6 runs in 11 2/3 IP. In 2006, he went 4-0 with 3 saves and a 2.76 ERA for the VSL Reds. He was moved to the rotation in 2007 and was 7-3 with a 2.00 ERA for the DSL Reds, walking only 10 in 81 innings.
The Panamanian right-hander split 2008 between the DSL Reds (4-2, 3.03) and GCL Reds (1-3, 6.48). He was a late addition to Panama's provisional roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
