Hofer's next stint was assistant coach of Kinheim from 1999-2002 before becoming head coach himself in 2003. He went back to being assistant coach in 2004-2005 but took the reigns in mid-2005. He guided the Amsterdam Pirates in 2006 and 2007 before steeping down and being replaced by Rikkert Faneyte; he returned as assistant in 2009 before back problems forced his retirement.

He spent 332 games and 9 seasons as a head coach. His sons Mike Hofer and Raymond Hofer played in the Hoofdklasse and Raymond also spent two years in the US minors.
