Pitcher Lou Thuman played for the Washington Senators in 1939 and 1940. He served in the military during World War II and suffered a severe injury that ended his baseball career. He was shot during the Normandy invasion, damaging his lung and pitching shoulder. He later received a Purple Heart but was unable to return to baseball due to the severity of his injuries. According to family, he was devastated by this and rarely even talked about his baseball career until very late in his life. Thuman died of pneumonia in 2000 at age 84.
