Long Island is an island located at the south-eastern tip of New York State, in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Connecticut, from which it is separated by Long Island Sound. It is immediately northeast of New York City. The island includes both suburban municipalies that are part of the New York metropolitan area, and wildnerness and rural areas that are popular vacation resorts. The island largely corresponds to Nassau County, NY. Long Island can also refer to the former city of Long Island, NY, which, for greater confusion, was not on the island but is now part of Bronx, NY.
